Physicists have harnessed the aloofness of quantum particles to create a new type of crystal.
This image shows the view from the surface of one of the planets in the TRAPPIST-1 system. At least seven planets orbit this ultracool dwarf star 40 light-years from Earth and they are all roughly the same size as the Earth.
This image shows exoplanet HD 189733b, as it passes in front of its parent star, called HD 189733A. Hubble's instruments observed the system in 2010, and in 2011 following a large flare from the star (depicted in the image). Following the flare, Hubble observed the planet's atmosphere evaporating at a rate of over 1000 tonnes per second.
This striking new NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image shows a glittering bauble named Messier 92.Located in the northern constellation of Hercules, this globular cluster - a ball of stars that orbits a galactic core like a satellite - was first discovered by astronomer Johann Elert Bode in 1777.
